Sustainable public transport
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important. New initiatives for sustainable construction, sustainable energy and sustainable mobility arise almost daily. Climate research shows that the exploitation of the earth and its resources on the current scale cannot sustain. Of all sustainable developments, few focuses on public transport. Public transport is more sustainable than, for example, individual transport by car. However, this does not mean that public transport itself cannot become even more sustainable.
The study
FromAtoB has studied possibilities to make trains more sustainable. In the study we present scenarios for 2030 and 2045. Intercity and regional train concepts have been developed for each of these scenarios. We have focused on concepts for both the interior and exterior of single deck and double decker trains.
The future
Our research focuses on how to create zero-emission, clean and comfortable trains with new more sustainable materials and innovative techniques. Based on these findings, we have made designs for the layout of the train, accessibility and subsystems such as climate control. As a result of this study, we are continuing to develop more promising components.
The changes we expect to rail-infrastructure in 2045: large parts of the rail network will no longer have overhead lines; trains will be self-sufficient. Their batteries will be charged at stations on the way.
